A Week in the Carolinas
What do you do in the middle of a pandemic and you’ve got a bunch of vacation club points to use or lose?
Pack your bags with extra face masks, some hand sanitizer, and go on a week-long vacation in the Carolinas.
Of course you also look for locales that are off-the-beaten-path, open to the public because they’re outdoor spots, and you steer clear of crowds.
There are road trips and then there are epic road trips. Grab that National Park System passport and let’s connect the dots.
Our epic road trip through the Carolinas started (of course) in Virginia. Our goal was to visit as many of the National Parks, National Monuments, National Battlefields, and National Historic Sights that we could during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic season. We were aware of our travel restrictions:
Wear a mask while indoors.
Maintain physical and social distance between ourselves and strangers.
Wash our hands regularly, etc.
We did a number of things most folks think or have heard about and visited a number of places off the beaten path …
Toured the Village of Appomattox Court House
Dropped in on the Birthplace of Booker T. Washington.
Ate Bar-B-Que in Mount Airy, NC
Visited the Cowpens Battlefield
Avoided getting our feet wet or bit by snakes in the swamps of Congaree National Park
Rode a tandem bike on Hilton Head Island
Drank tea and stood under a 500 year old Angel Oak tree near Charleston, NC
Stopped in on the Reconstruction Memorial Historic Site in Beaufort, SC
Rode horses near the surf in Myrtle Beach
Visited the parts of the Petersburg and Richmond Battlefields.
… And most of all, we had the time of our lives in spite of the COVID19 pandemic curtailing most folks fall vacations.
