Memories of a Rocky Mountain High
Julia has told me that I’m experiencing my Scouter Life in reverse. I’ve attending an annual meeting, two regional meetings, worked on a national-level project, served on a district committee, visited a World Jamboree, and if I stick with this plan will one day work with a Pack, Troop, or Crew years from now.
Here are some random photos taken while at the BSA National Meeting held at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Colorado over the Memorial Day Weekend 2019.
As you can see above, they serve a mean and yummy chili at this resort. There are a number of local craft beers on tap and dozens of large screen televisions located throughout this sports pub. The more formal meals were served as group meals during the BSA meeting / convention. Every dish was delicious and the Root Beer Float first rate.
While attending this meeting, this was the first I learned of BSA Scouter awards named after “critters” from North America. Silver Beaver medals are awarded for service at the council level. Silver Antelopes awarded for service at Area, Region, and now Service Territories. And the Silver Buffalo is reserved for service at the national level. The awards ceremony at the National Meeting is truly impressive.
After this National Meeting, Julia and I were able to tour Colorado Springs. We saw the Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Garden of the Gods, and the Burial Place of Buffalo Bill. We also toured the United States Air Force Academy.
Note: This was a school I was accepted to over 40 years ago. I opted to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Hmmm, I wonder if I would have ever met Julia had I gone to Air Force rather than West Point ??!
We stayed at the Gaylord Rockies Resort, of course. This is a truly grand hotel, albeit a bit pricey. There are literally hundreds of alternative places to stay in an around Denver, Colorado Springs, and Boulder.
Where ever you choose to lay your head at the end of the day, know that memories made in Colorado will truly leave you with a Rocky Mountain High.
